Maximizing Travel with Southwest’s Companion Pass
As someone who loves to travel often, I’m always on the lookout for ways to make it more affordable while still getting the most out of every trip. One of my favorite travel hacks is Southwest Airlines’ Companion Pass, which allows you to bring a companion with you for free (excluding taxes and fees) every time you fly.
Let me tell you how this pass has transformed my travel planning and how you can take advantage of this incredible deal!
The Companion Pass is one of the best travel perks out there. It allows you to bring a companion along for free (excluding taxes and fees) every time you book a flight with Southwest. Every time I fly, I can add the same flight for my travel buddy, which has made travel so much more accessible. I use this perk for trips, quick getaways, and spontaneous adventures.
After registering and booking a roundtrip flight within a promotional period, I earned a pass valid from January 6, 2025, to March 6, 2025—two months of free flights for my companion!
This is how I qualified.
Register for the promotion. Ensure you’re registered for Southwest’s Rapid Rewards program and the current promotion. This will allow you to earn the Companion Pass.
Book a roundtrip flight during the promotion period. A little FYI: the promotion period is usually a very short window, so be ready to book a flight. I booked a same-day roundtrip to Salt Lake City for $127, which was a great deal. You can save money by booking a flight to a nearby city, as this reduces the cost of the trip while still qualifying for the pass.
Fly before November 20, 2024. Your flight must take place within the travel period, so plan accordingly.
Once you’ve completed your qualifying flights, the Companion Pass will be added to your account and ready to use from January to March!
PS: This promotion is no longer available. I am sharing the most recent opportunity.
Here’s why I love the Companion Pass and how it has made travel easier:
I save on accommodation and food costs by booking a same-day roundtrip to a nearby city. It’s a quick in-and-out trip with minimal expenses, all while still qualifying for the Companion Pass. Even though the qualifying flight is short, I get the chance to experience a new place. I can explore briefly and decide if I’d like to return for a more extended visit in the future. While visiting, I like to grab a meal at a local restaurant, buy something from a local shop, or simply enjoy the scenery—all while supporting the local economy. Since it’s just a quick trip, packing light is easy; I only need a carry-on bag, avoiding the hassle of checked luggage. If I have some downtime, I can also make it a productive day by doing some work, reading, or planning my next adventure.
To make the most of this deal, I recommend booking short flights to nearby destinations that offer the best deals. For example, I booked a quick roundtrip to Salt Lake City from Denver for only $127. Cities like Las Vegas, Phoenix, or Austin were also great options for me from Denver. Depending on your location, check for the low fares. Flexibility with your travel dates is also helpful in finding the lowest fares, and midweek flights tend to be cheaper. Finally, always register for the promotion before booking your flight to ensure you qualify for the Companion Pass.
The Companion Pass has made it easier for me to plan quick, cost-effective trips and bring along a friend without breaking the bank. If you love to travel like I do, this is a perk worth taking advantage of—especially with a simple, affordable roundtrip that allows you to explore and still get the benefits.
